B I M B I A II
On September 11, 2024, at the Chelsea Factory, Kibonen Nfi, co-founder of the African Fashion Council, made a triumphant return to New York Fashion Week (NYFW) with her latest collection, “Bimbia II.” This runway show marked a significant milestone in Kibonen’s illustrious career, showcasing her commitment to blending traditional African artistry with contemporary fashion. Kibonen’s designs are a confluence of cultures, crafting stylish garments with a social conscience. The collection features natural fibers such as linen, straw, burlap, raffia, and bamboo, reflecting the materials used in pre-colonial Africa. Gold accents throughout the pieces symbolize the riches and trade that flourished in African kingdoms long before colonization. By avoiding synthetic fabrics, Kibonen emphasizes sustainability and ethical fashion, aligning with her broader mission.
Through this collection, I wanted to depict the riches and vibrant trade of pre-colonial Africa. Our stories often seem to start after colonialism, but we were rich in culture and resources long before. ‘Bimbia II’ showcases that heritage using natural fibers and gold, symbolizing the wealth and sustainability of our ancestors. – Kibonen Nfi
